Overview
Rattlesnake lake is a common stop for Seattle locals. I stumbled upon Rattlesnake lake after talking to a few friends in Seattle and asking them what their favorite summer activities near Seattle were. Almost all of those friends mentioned Rattlesnake lake and the ledge trail. I visited early in the morning on a weekend to complete the Rattlesnake Ridge hiking trail and go for a swim in the lake after. This was the first of a few trips I have since taken to Rattlesnake Lake following that itinerary. In this blog I will go over everything you need to know about visiting Rattlesnake Lake.
The History of Rattlesnake Lake
This lake was not naturally formed, but rather owes its existence to the construction of the Rattlesnake Lake Dam in 1915. Originally built to generate hydroelectric power, the lake and its surrounding area have since become a beloved recreational destination for locals and visitors alike.
This recreation area is meticulously maintained to ensure the preservation of its natural beauty and the safety of its visitors. The dedicated efforts of the parks department ensure that amenities such as picnic areas, hiking trails, and interpretive signage are well-kept, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.
Rattlesnake Lake Weather and Seasonality
One of the intriguing aspects of Rattlesnake Lake is its ever-changing weather patterns. Situated in the Pacific Northwest, the area experiences a diverse climate influenced by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains. From misty mornings to sunny afternoons, visitors can witness a myriad of weather phenomena throughout the year, adding an element of unpredictability to their outdoor adventures.
Water Activities at Rattlesnake Lake
The most popular activities at the Lake include recreation on the water. You will find people swimming, fishing, or paddling around in the middle of the lake. I love to bring my favorite floaty to Rattlenake to sit on the water for a few hours. Fishing regulations at vary depending on the season. You will need to possess a valid Washington state fishing license to fish anywhere in the state. For up-to-date information please visit the Washington Department of Fishing and Wildlife’s page on Rattlesnake Lake here. Some of the fish you can expect to catch are rainbow trout and cutthroat trout.
Rattlesnake Ledge Hike
For outdoor enthusiasts seeking a memorable experience, embarking on the Rattlesnake Lake hike is an absolute must. This trail offers views of the surrounding landscape, including the waters of the lake and the greenery of the Snoqualmie Valley. The hike is just a short hour drive from Seattle. This short commute makes the Rattlesnake Ledge Hike a popular trail on the weekends. I recommend arriving early and preparing yourself for crowds.
The trail is well maintained and suitable for solo hikers. I like hiking the Rattlesnake Ledge Trail on days where i’m hiking alone. This is because I don’t worry too much about injury or wild animals. It’s possible to bump into animals such as black bears on this hike, but due to the high volume of hikers it’s unlikely. That being said, make sure you’re aware of what to do if you’re hiking alone and you run into a bear. Oh, and don’t forget your bear spray when you’re hiking in Washington state!
Educational Resources at Rattlesnake Lake
Beyond its recreational offerings, the lake also serves as an educational resource. There are interpretive displays scattered throughout the area providing insight into the region’s geological and cultural history. The exhibits go over information on the formation of the Cascade Mountains and the indigenous Snoqualmie Tribe. This area has a rich cultural heritage, with remnants of early settler activity scattered throughout the landscape. From historic cabins to logging artifacts, these all serve as reminders of the area’s storied past.
Families flock to Rattlesnake Lake for its abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation. You’ll see families along the beach enjoying the shallow waters. I have also often seen families visiting Rattlesnake Lake to learn from the educational resources offered here.
Conclusion
No matter what you’re looking for, the lake has something for you to explore. The lake area is perfect for people of all ages and activity levels. Don’t forget to remind yourself of the deep history of this area while you’re exploring. Also, take a moment to inform your friends or family of the land they’re recreating on. Follow in my footsteps on the next hot day in Seattle and pack your favorite floaty and head to the lake for a day of fun. Pack your bags, bring a snack, and head over to Rattlesnake lake this summer!
