If you’re looking for a hiking trail near Seattle that offers amazing views and a workout, Mount Si is a great option. I was inclined to try hiking Mount Si simply because of how many locals mentioned it to me, and when I finally did it I was not disappointed. In this blog, I’ll talk about what I love about the Mount Si hiking trail as well as some logistical things to keep in mind.
Mount Si: A Hike Near Seattle
View the trailhead on Google maps here.
Located approximately 30 miles east of Seattle, you can get to this trailhead in less than an hour if you’re heading over from downtown Seattle. You’ll spot the mountain on your drive in, which is something I love because there is nothing better than driving home from a challenging hike and being able to say, “I climbed that mountain”.
You will pass through North Bend Washington to get to this trailhead. I highly recommend stopping for a coffee in this town on your way to or from the Mount Si hiking trail.
The Mount Si Hiking Trail
Length: 8 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: 3100 feet
Traffic: Busy trail
Difficulty: Challenging
I would say that this trail is challenging simply due to the amount of elevation gain you have in only 4 miles. It is pretty steep getting up to the top, but there’s a lot of room along the trail for you to stop and take breaks. I think that almost anyone can complete this trail if you plan on taking it slowly. The trail itself is well-maintained, there is a large parking lot at the trailhead, and there are bathrooms available in the parking lot.
The Mount Si hiking trail starts out moderately flat and then quickly turns into switchbacks that will lead you up to the peak. With only 4 miles from your car to the trailhead and over 3000ft of elevation gain, expect a tough climb to get to the top of Mount Si.
Tips for Hiking Mount Si Near Seattle
Start Early: Because this is one of the most popular hiking trails near Seattle, consider starting your hike early in the morning. Parking at the trailhead can fill up quickly, so arriving early ensures you secure a spot.
Pack Essentials: Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and layers of clothing. Water is especially important on this hike because you won’t be passing many streams or lakes to refill at.
Leave No Trace: Respect the natural environment by staying on the designated trail, disposing of trash properly, and minimizing your impact on the ecosystem.
Conclusion
Hiking Mount Si near Seattle offers an unforgettable outdoor experience that really does encapsulate a lot of the reasons why I love Washington. You’ll see the mossy forest, wildlife, and the views from the top are unreal. I also love that this trail is suitable for all levels of experience.
