Just 20-30 minutes north of Seattle is an off-leash dog park that will blow your mind! While there are tons of great dog parks in Seattle, it’s worth the drive to visit Edmonds off-leash dog park for a day. There is a sandy beach for your dog to explore and access to the Puget Sound for swimming. In this post I’ll be sharing everything you need to know about visiting Edmonds off-leash dog beach.
Overview
My first encounter with this coastal gem occurred during my quest for dog-friendly beaches near Seattle. I arrived and was greeted with a breathtaking views of the glistening waters stretching out towards the horizon. Despite the typical rainy weather on my visits, I can imagine the silhouette of the Olympic Mountains on a clear day. This would add an extra layer of charm to this coastal park.
This field offers the ideal setting for fetch, with plenty of room for dogs to chase after their favorite toys. Whether on land or in the water, the park provides ample opportunities for playful antics and joyful frolicking. For those with a more adventurous spirit, a small agility course awaits. This offers a chance for dogs to showcase their agility prowess or engage in some entertaining training sessions.
So, whether you’re seeking a picturesque backdrop for playtime with your furry friend or simply yearning for a tranquil escape by the sea, the Edmonds Off-Leash Dog Park beckons with its irresistible charm. Come and experience the magic for yourself, and create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
Getting There
You can find Google maps directions here.
To reach the Edmonds Off-Leash Dog Park, follow the scenic route through the Edmonds Marina. As you drive through the marina, you’ll be treated to views of boats and the Puget Sound. Along the way, you’ll pass by coffee shops, restaurants, and small marina shops, each offering an opportunity to indulge in a quick refreshment or browse the shops.
One particular favorite spot of mine is the Waterfront Coffee Company, where you can stop by for a coffee before starting on your beach adventure. With its prime location near this Edmonds dog park, it’s the perfect pit stop to fuel up and unwind before diving into a day of fun with your pup. So, take a stroll through the marina, savoring the sights and sounds of this coastal paradise, before arriving at the Edmonds Off-Leash Dog Beach.
When to Visit
I have taken my dog to the Edmonds off-leash area in the morning and the evening. In my experience, it gets crowded in the evening. With limited access to the waterfront people tend to congregate in that area and if you have a shy dog it might not be the best environment. Because of this, I like to come first thing in the morning. This is a sleepy area and if you show up early you wont have an issue finding space for your dog to explore.
Another thing to consider is the weather. I have had bad luck on the weather when visiting this park, and now just always assume it is going to be cold and rainy. Because this is right on the water, the weather can change up quickly. Make sure that you have a raincoat ready. Another thing I have noticed is that this is a hotspot for wind surfing, meaning there is a lot of wind here. The dog beach is located in a very windy point on the beach, so pack warm.
Amenities
Fenced in area: The Edmonds Off-Leash Dog Beach is fully fenced in and ready for your dog. The only area that is not fenced in is the side of the park along the water. Although there is not a fence here, the waters of the Puget Sound serve as a fence of their own to keep your dog contained. That being said, you need to ensure that your dog will come when called at this Edmonds dog park.
Water Access: There is access both swimming and drinking water access at this park. Your dog can swim freely in the Puget Sound while you are here. I often play fetch with my dog in the Puget Sound waters. There is also a fresh water faucet for your dog to drink from. It’s located near the beach so that you don’t have to walk far for your dog to drink. This is something that I appreciate because my dog loves drink the water from the Puget Sound a few times during our visits. There’s also a hose attachment to the water faucet making it very easy to rinse your dog off after swimming in the salty water.
Poop bags: There is a poop bag station at this park. It’s located near the front entrance so make sure that you grab a bag on your way in. Every time I’ve visited there have been poop bags available.
Garbage cans: There are a few different garbage cans scattered around the park. There is one near the entrance and one near the beach. This is another thing I appreciate about this park. It feels like they really put effort into placing garbage and water in convenient locations for dog owners.
Bathrooms: There are port-a-potties outside of the front entrance to the park.
Parking: There is a large parking area right next to the park with overflow parking around the corner. I never worry about finding parking when I visit Edmonds off-leash area because of this.
Wildlife
You might encounter some wildlife at Edmonds off-leash dog park! It’s not uncommon for people to see seals or sea lions on the beach or swimming nearby. It is very important for you and your dog to maintain a distance from them to avoid disrupting these marine animals. There’s a good chance you’ll see baby seals laying out on the beach. While this can be a really fun encounter, do your part and keep a distance for the sake of these animals.
I have also heard from not one, but two different people that they have spotted orcas from this beach! With views of the Puget Sound, I can see how this would be a great spot to hang out and search for whales. The season to spot orcas in the Puget Sound is April – August. Plan your trip to this beach during the spring and summer months for a chance to see them!
Off-Leash Area Edmonds Non-Profit Organization
This space is managed by a local non-profit organization created in 2005. Their goal is to help keep this a safe space for dogs in Edmonds. You can find detailed information about their mission and links for donations on their website, OLAE. They maintain the parks cleanliness, keep the poop bags stocked, take the garbages out, and continuously fight for the rights of Edmonds dog owners.
This organization is one of the reasons I love Washington state. I have seen so many examples of communities coming together to support what they care about in Washington. That’s one of the reasons this state has preserved the natural world and created spaces where you can find community.
Conclusion
With its sandy beaches, views of the Puget Sound, and ample space for dogs to play, Edmonds Dog Park captivates visitors. It’s perfect for a morning stroll along the shore or watching your furry friend in the waves. Each moment here offers a sense of magic and connection to the natural world. Beyond its scenic beauty, the park’s vibrant community makes it special. Dedicated volunteers maintain its cleanliness and safety, while fellow dog lovers share stories and laughter.
