The History of the Troll
The Fremont Troll, an iconic public sculpture located in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, has an intriguing history that intertwines local folklore, urban redevelopment, and community art. Created in 1990 by a team of four local artists—Steve Badanes, Will Martin, Donna Walter, and Ross Whitehead—the troll was the winning design in a competition organized by the Fremont Arts Council. The goal was to revitalize an area under the Aurora Bridge, which had become a haven for litter and illicit activities.
The troll sculpture is 18 feet tall and clutching an actual Volkswagen Beetle in its massive hand. It’s constructed from steel rebar, wire, and concrete. The choice of a troll was inspired by the neighborhood’s quirky and artistic character, as well as by Scandinavian folklore in which features trolls living under bridges. The installation of the Fremont Troll was part of a broader initiative to transform neglected urban spaces into areas of creativity and community engagement. Since its unveiling, the troll has become a beloved landmark, drawing tourists and locals alike, and contributing to Fremont’s identity as the “Center of the Universe.”

This tourist destination sits inside of a Seattle neighborhood. There isn’t a parking lot available so instead you’ll have to find street parking nearby. Keep in mind that Fremont has lots of steep and narrow streets!
Troll’s Knoll Park
Next to the statue and the bridge is a public park! The Troll’s Knolls park is small and as of 2024 is under construction. You can still wander through the short trail and take a look at the fun troll themed items.
There are plans for this park to expand and take shape into more of a natural escape. I reccomend planning on walking around here for a few minutes when you come to visit the Fremont Troll!
My Experience Visiting the Troll
I knew I had to mark visiting the Fremont Troll off of my Seattle bucket list. That being said, I wouldn’t say I was in a rush. In the past, I have tended to stay away from tourist activities but i’m glad i’ve take then time to see the Fremont Troll.

- Fremont Coffee Shop: This is my favorite coffee shop in all of Seattle. It is built in an old home converted cafe which adds a unique charm. The espresso here is great so if you’re looking for high quality coffee this is a great option in Fremont. If you’re hungry, they have a few options for you. You can choose between a couple of pastry options and breakfast burritos!
- Indoor Sun Shoppe: This plant store will leave you feeling like you just walked through a jungle! It’s the most unique plant store I’ve visited in Seattle. Whether you’re looking to buy houseplants in Fremont or just browsing, this is a great place to kill some time. Make sure you head to the back of the store and check out the selection of carnivorous plants.
